Curatorial Projects
A summary of my recent activities
Working Class British Art Network
I began this network in 2020 to support artists from working-class backgrounds and provide dedicated research on how class barriers operate in the contemporary British art world.
Found Cities, Lost Objects: Women in the City
curated with Lubaina Himid CBE
A large-scale touring exhibition highlighting shared female experiences of urban life, considering the privileges enjoyed and boundaries faced by women in the modern city. Launches in May 2022 at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and tours throughout 2022 and 2023.
TAKE TWO
A schools lending project working with students and teachers across the country to embed art into school life. Pilot programme launched in 2022 in West Yorkshire, South London and Coventry
Criminal Ornamentation: Yinka Shonibare CBE curates the Arts Council Collection
Criminal Ornamentation explored the cultural and social dimensions of the use of pattern in art. Launched in September 2018 at the Attenborough Arts Centre (Leicester) and toured to Longside Gallery (West Yorkshire), Royal Albert Memorial Museum (Exeter) and Southampton City Art Gallery.
Grayson Perry: The Vanity of Small Differences
The Vanity of Small Differences tells the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste. Inspired by William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress the six tapestries, measuring 2m x 4m each, chart the 'class journey' made by young Tim Rakewell and include many of the characters, incidents and objects Grayson Perry encountered on journeys through Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and The Cotswolds for the television series 'All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry'.
